Erik Engstrom has served as CEO of RELX (formerly Reed Elsevier) since 2009, executing one of the most successful corporate transformations in European business history. When he took over, RELX was primarily a publisher — producing scientific journals, legal texts, and business magazines — supplemented by a large exhibitions business. Engstrom has systematically transformed the company into a technology-driven data analytics and decision tools business, where software, algorithms, and data products drive the majority of revenue and profit. RELX operates four segments: Scientific, Technical & Medical (STM — Elsevier, the world's largest academic publisher, providing journals, reference works, and research tools like ScienceDirect and Scopus), Risk Analytics (LexisNexis Risk Solutions, providing fraud detection, identity verification, and insurance risk assessment tools), Legal (LexisNexis, providing legal research, practice management, and analytics tools), and Exhibitions (trade shows and events). The transformation's genius lies in the shift from selling content to selling analytical tools and decision support software built on top of proprietary data. LexisNexis Risk Solutions, for example, processes billions of records to help insurance companies, banks, and government agencies assess risk and detect fraud. Key stock drivers include organic revenue growth (particularly in the high-margin analytics and tools segments), the pace of AI integration into products, scientific publishing market dynamics, legal technology adoption, and the sustainability of RELX's high returns on invested capital.
