Manages Turkey's most digitally advanced bank — BBVA's flagship emerging market subsidiary navigating hyperinflation, lira volatility, and a 70M-person market

Recep Bastug leads Garanti BBVA, one of Turkey's largest private-sector banks and a majority-owned subsidiary of Spain's BBVA. Garanti has built one of the most advanced digital banking platforms in emerging markets, with a mobile app serving millions of users and high digital transaction penetration. The bank provides retail, commercial, corporate, and investment banking services. Operating in Turkey presents unique challenges: persistent high inflation (often exceeding 50%), dramatic lira depreciation, unconventional monetary policy (including periods of interest rate cuts during high inflation under government pressure), and complex banking regulations including reserve requirements and lending mandates. Despite these challenges, Turkey's large, young population (85 million) and relatively low banking penetration create long-term growth potential. BBVA's 86% ownership of Garanti has been controversial — the Spanish bank acquired its stake at much higher Turkish lira valuations, and the persistent lira depreciation has eroded returns in euro terms. Key stock drivers include Turkish interest rate policy, lira exchange rate, inflation trajectory, loan growth, net interest margins, asset quality (particularly in commercial real estate and SME lending), Turkish regulatory changes, and the broader Turkish economic outlook.
