Ding Shizhong

Ding Shizhong is the Chairman and CEO of ANTA Sports, China's largest sportswear company by revenue, which he co-founded in 1991 in Jinjiang, Fujian province — a region known as China's shoe capital. Born into a shoemaking family, Ding started by selling shoes door-to-door as a teenager before establishing his own brand. ANTA listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2007 and has since grown into a multi-brand group rivaling global giants Nike and Adidas in Greater China. Ding's strategic masterstroke was the multi-brand acquisition model. In 2009, ANTA acquired the China license for FILA, then a struggling Italian brand in the Chinese market. Under ANTA's management, FILA China was transformed from near-obscurity into a premium fashion-sports powerhouse generating over RMB 25 billion in annual revenue — one of the greatest brand turnarounds in Asian retail history. This success gave Ding the confidence to pursue even larger deals. In 2019, Ding led a consortium that took Amer Sports private for €4.6 billion — acquiring a portfolio including Arc'teryx, Salomon, Wilson, and Peak Performance. Amer Sports was subsequently relisted on the New York Stock Exchange in early 2024, unlocking value from the portfolio. Arc'teryx alone has become a global luxury-outdoor phenomenon, with its rapid growth in China and North America validating Ding's bet on premium outdoor brands. ANTA's competitive advantage in China stems from a vertically integrated DTC (direct-to-consumer) model with thousands of owned stores, deep understanding of Chinese consumer preferences, and the ability to operate vastly different brand positionings under one corporate umbrella. The risk factors include China's uneven economic recovery, potential geopolitical tensions affecting brand perception, and the challenge of managing an increasingly global brand portfolio from a Chinese headquarter.
