Rex Sinquefield
Evidence-based investing, DFA, factor portfolios, passive-active spectrum
Rex Sinquefield co-founded Dimensional Fund Advisors with David Booth in 1981, applying the academic research of Eugene Fama and others to construct systematic factor portfolios. DFA pioneered evidence-based investing — using small-cap premiums, value premiums, and later profitability factors — in institutional mandates before these concepts became mainstream through the factor investing movement. Sinquefield retired from DFA in 2005 and became a major philanthropist and political donor in Missouri. His work helped bridge academic finance and institutional practice. Through his philanthropic activities in Missouri, Sinquefield also funded research at the Show-Me Institute advocating for lower taxes and freer markets, reflecting a broader commitment to applying evidence-based reasoning to economic policy as well as to investment management.
