Introduced product conventions for NFT listing, discovery and creator fees that shaped secondary market mechanics across platforms
Built and scaled OpenSea into the dominant NFT marketplace model in the early NFT boom, delivering concrete product features such as collection discovery tools, listing and bidding mechanics, and on‑platform handling of creator fees. Those specific product decisions became benchmarks for how secondary markets display assets, match buyers and sellers, and route fee flows to creators and platforms. Competing marketplaces, including Magic Eden, analyzed and adapted these mechanics when designing their own fee structures and listing UX. Public positioning and feature rollouts from OpenSea influenced expectations around creator royalties, off‑chain versus on‑chain enforcement, and default marketplace behaviours. Magic Eden's policy and product teams referenced these industry norms when creating their own royalty handling and discovery mechanisms, resulting in practical alignment and differentiation in how liquidity concentrated on or dispersed across platforms. The technical patterns and API contracts popularized by OpenSea also served as interoperability references for third‑party tools. OpenSea's market share and product playbook therefore exerted indirect but concrete effects on Magic Eden's strategic choices about onboarding creators, configuring fee splits, and designing search and recommendation flows. Those documented product artifacts and competitive dynamics were a material factor in shaping NFT liquidity and merchant behaviour across marketplaces.
