Debra Crew became CEO of Diageo in June 2023 under difficult circumstances — she stepped up from her role as COO when long-serving CEO Ivan Menezes stepped down due to serious illness. Menezes passed away in June 2023, and Crew was confirmed as permanent CEO. An American executive, she had previously been CEO of Reynolds American (the tobacco company) before joining Diageo in 2020 as president of its North American division. Diageo is the world's largest spirits company by revenue and market share, with a portfolio of over 200 brands spanning nearly every category of alcoholic beverages. The crown jewels include Johnnie Walker (the world's top-selling Scotch whisky), Guinness (the world's most popular stout), Don Julio and Casamigos (premium tequilas), Tanqueray (gin), Smirnoff (vodka), and Captain Morgan (rum). The company operates in over 180 markets with significant exposure to both developed and emerging economies. Crew inherited a business facing a post-pandemic normalization after several years of exceptional spirits demand driven by at-home consumption during COVID lockdowns. The key challenge has been destocking — distributors and retailers reducing excess inventory built up during the boom, creating a temporary revenue headwind even as consumer demand remains relatively healthy. Latin America and the Caribbean region, in particular, experienced a sharp correction. Her strategic priorities include premiumization (shifting the portfolio mix toward higher-priced, higher-margin spirits), expanding the Guinness brand beyond its traditional markets (it has become increasingly popular in the U.S.), accelerating growth in tequila and mezcal (the fastest-growing spirits category globally), and managing the cultural shift as younger consumers moderate their alcohol intake. The key investor question is whether Diageo can return to mid-single-digit organic growth and margin expansion as the destocking cycle ends.
