David Baszucki

David Baszucki co-founded Roblox in 2004 with Erik Cassel, drawing on his experience building Interactive Physics — an educational physics simulation used in schools. Born in 1963 in Canada and raised in Minnesota, Baszucki studied electrical engineering and computer science at Stanford. His vision was to create a platform where anyone could build 3D experiences and share them with the world — a vision that took 15 years to reach mainstream adoption. Roblox's breakthrough came during the late 2010s when the platform became the dominant digital hangout for children under 13. Unlike traditional games where a studio builds content, Roblox is a platform where millions of user-developers create games, virtual worlds, and social experiences using Roblox Studio. The most popular experiences — Adopt Me!, Brookhaven, Blox Fruits — attract tens of millions of players. Developers earn Robux (the platform's virtual currency) based on engagement, with the top developers earning millions of dollars annually. The COVID-19 pandemic supercharged Roblox's growth, as children stuck at home turned to the platform as their primary social space. The company went public via direct listing in March 2021. Daily active users surged from 32 million pre-pandemic to over 70 million, with users spending an average of over 2 hours daily on the platform. Roblox's virtual economy processes billions of Robux transactions, and the company generates revenue through Robux purchases used for in-experience items and avatar customization. Baszucki's strategic focus is aging up the platform — attracting users over 13, who currently represent the fastest-growing demographic — while expanding into new verticals: virtual concerts (featuring artists like Elton John and Twenty One Pilots), brand partnerships (Nike, Gucci, NFL), educational experiences, and advertising. The monetization challenge remains: despite massive engagement, Roblox spends heavily on infrastructure, developer payouts, and trust & safety (critical for a platform where children interact).
