Ireneusz Fąfara
global
Ireneusz Fąfara became President and CEO of PKN Orlen in 2024, taking over Central Europe's largest integrated energy company. PKN Orlen was transformed through a series of mega-mergers under his predecessor — absorbing Grupa Lotos (Poland's second-largest refiner), PGNiG (Poland's dominant natural gas company), and Energa (a major Polish power utility). The combined entity is a diversified energy conglomerate with operations spanning crude oil refining, petrochemicals, retail fuel distribution, natural gas exploration and production, and electricity generation. PKN Orlen operates refineries in Płock (one of Europe's largest), Gdańsk, and facilities in the Czech Republic (Unipetrol) and Lithuania (ORLEN Lietuva), with total refining capacity exceeding 700,000 barrels per day. The retail network comprises over 3,500 fuel stations across Poland, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania, and Hungary — the largest fuel retail network in Central Europe. Fąfara's leadership faces the challenge of integrating these massive acquisitions while navigating the energy transition. PKN Orlen has announced ambitious plans for offshore wind in the Baltic Sea, hydrogen production, and biofuels, while managing the profitability of its traditional refining and petrochemical operations. Key stock drivers include refining margins, natural gas prices, Polish energy policy, merger integration synergies, renewable energy investment progress, and the competitive dynamics in Central European energy markets.
