Daniel Amos

Chairman & CEO of Aflac · Aflac

global

Daniel Amos has served as CEO of Aflac Incorporated since 1990 and Chairman since 2001, making him one of the longest-tenured chief executives in the Fortune 500. Under his leadership spanning over three decades, Aflac grew from a mid-size supplemental insurance company into the world's dominant player in voluntary workplace benefits, with a market capitalization exceeding $50 billion. The company is uniquely positioned with massive operations in two markets: the United States and Japan, where Aflac Japan insures approximately one in four households. Amos is the nephew of Aflac co-founders John, Paul, and Bill Amos, making him a second-generation leader of the family-founded business. His most visible contribution to Aflac's brand was approving the iconic Aflac Duck advertising campaign in 2000, which transformed Aflac from an obscure insurance name into one of America's most recognized brands. Beyond marketing, his strategic genius lay in recognizing the enormous potential of supplemental insurance in Japan's aging society and building Aflac Japan into the company's largest profit center. His key decisions involve managing Aflac's substantial investment portfolio (heavily weighted toward Japanese government bonds and US corporate credit), navigating Japan's ultra-low interest rate environment, growing the US voluntary benefits business through employer partnerships, and capital return strategy (Aflac has been one of the most aggressive share repurchasers in the insurance industry). CEO succession planning is increasingly in focus given Amos's long tenure.
