Managing bonds since 1958; Loomis Sayles Bond Fund consistently outperformed Barclays Agg over 30 years; flexibility to hold high-yield, convertibles, and foreign bonds distinguishes his approach.
Dan Fuss studied at Marquette University and earned his CFA designation. He joined Loomis Sayles in 1976 and has been associated with the firm for over four decades, serving as vice chairman. He has been managing bond investments since 1958 — an extraordinarily long track record spanning multiple complete interest rate cycles. His approach to fixed income is fundamentally value-oriented: he evaluates bond investments using the same rigorous analysis applied to equities, seeking securities where the yield more than compensates for the credit risk, and maintaining a flexible mandate that allows him to invest across the credit quality spectrum from government bonds to high-yield corporate debt. The Loomis Sayles Bond Fund, which he managed as lead portfolio manager, consistently outperformed the Bloomberg Barclays Aggregate Bond Index over three decades through this active, value-driven approach. Fuss is notable for his willingness to invest in overlooked credit situations — corporate restructurings, emerging market debt, and convertible bonds — that other bond managers avoid. His multi-decade track record has made him one of the most respected practitioners in fixed-income asset management. He has continued working actively at Loomis Sayles well into his 80s, reflecting a lifelong passion for fixed-income investing.
