Development economics criticism, African economic policy, aid effectiveness debate, trade vs aid

Dambisa Moyo was born in Zambia and worked at Goldman Sachs and the World Bank before publishing "Dead Aid: Why Aid Is Not Working and How There Is a Better Way for Africa" (2009), which argued that Western development aid has been counterproductive for African economic development. The book sparked significant debate in development economics and policy circles. Her subsequent books include "How the West Was Lost", "Winner Take All" (on China's resource strategy), and "Edge of Chaos". Moyo has served on corporate boards including Barclays and Chevron. Her emphasis on market-based solutions — including sovereign bond issuance, foreign direct investment, and trade access — as alternatives to aid dependency provided African governments and development finance institutions with a framework for re-evaluating the conditions under which external capital flows support rather than undermine domestic institutional development and long-term economic self-sufficiency.
