Cristiano Amon is the President and CEO of Qualcomm, the world's largest designer of mobile processors and wireless modems, with annual revenue exceeding $35 billion. Born in 1970 in Brazil, Amon studied electrical engineering at UNICAMP (University of Campinas) and joined Qualcomm in 1995 as an engineer. He rose through the company's chip division (QCT), becoming president of the semiconductor business before being named CEO in June 2021. Amon's defining strategic mission is diversifying Qualcomm beyond its smartphone chip dependency. While Snapdragon processors power the majority of premium Android phones globally — and Qualcomm collects licensing royalties on nearly every smartphone sold through its foundational wireless patents — the smartphone market is mature and concentrated among fewer large buyers, particularly Apple's gradual transition to in-house modem chips. Amon's response has been aggressive expansion into automotive, PC, and IoT markets. In automotive, Qualcomm's Snapdragon Digital Chassis platform has become a leading computing platform for connected and autonomous vehicles. The company's automotive design-win pipeline exceeds $45 billion — revenue that will materialize over the next decade as vehicles increasingly rely on centralized computing architectures. In PCs, the Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus processors represent Qualcomm's most serious push into the laptop market, competing directly with Intel and AMD in Windows PCs with the advantage of ARM-based power efficiency and integrated AI acceleration. Amon sees the AI edge as Qualcomm's ultimate growth vector — the thesis that AI inference will increasingly run on-device (in phones, cars, PCs, and IoT endpoints) rather than solely in the cloud. Qualcomm's NPU (Neural Processing Unit) capabilities across Snapdragon platforms position the company to capture value from the proliferation of on-device AI, from smartphone camera processing to autonomous driving decisions to laptop copilot features.
