Colm Kelleher
European banking sector, Swiss financial system, UBS franchise, wealth management, Credit Suisse integration
Colm Kelleher spent the majority of his career at Morgan Stanley, rising to become President and serving in senior fixed income and institutional securities roles. He joined UBS as Chairman in 2022, taking over at a time when the bank was executing a major strategic simplification. In March 2023, Swiss authorities orchestrated the emergency takeover of Credit Suisse — which faced a confidence crisis following years of scandals — by UBS. Kelleher negotiated the acquisition, which was completed at a fraction of Credit Suisse's book value, with Swiss government guarantees protecting against certain losses. The transaction was one of the most consequential events in European banking history in decades, combining two of Switzerland's largest banks and requiring complex integration of disparate client bases, risk cultures, and thousands of employees.
