Founder & Chairman of Aier Eye Hospital Group · Aier Eye Hospital

global

Chen Bang is the founder and chairman of Aier Eye Hospital Group, the world's largest chain of eye hospitals. He founded the company in 2003 with a single ophthalmology clinic in Changsha, Hunan Province, and through a relentless hub-and-spoke expansion strategy built it into a network of over 800 eye care facilities across China. Aier went public on the Shenzhen ChiNext board in 2009 and has since become one of China's most valuable healthcare companies. Chen's business model innovation was applying a standardized, scalable approach to ophthalmology — a medical specialty with high procedure volumes, relatively predictable outcomes, and growing demand driven by aging populations and increasing screen time. His "partnership" model allows senior ophthalmologists to invest in and co-own Aier clinics, aligning incentives and enabling rapid geographic expansion. Aier further expanded internationally by acquiring eye care chains in Europe (Clínica Baviera in Spain and other European operations) and Southeast Asia. His strategic decisions involve the pace of new hospital openings, investment in premium services (refractive surgery, premium IOLs), international expansion strategy, managing regulatory relationships with Chinese health authorities, and navigating periodic controversies that arise in China's private healthcare sector. The stock is closely watched as a proxy for China's private healthcare growth and the country's aging demographics.
