Chase Coleman

Founder and Managing Partner · Tiger Global Management

Founded Tiger Global in 2001 with $25M seed from Robertson; grew to $95B AUM; early investor in Facebook, LinkedIn, Spotify, Airbnb; among top 5 largest hedge funds globally at peak.

Chase Coleman studied history at Williams College and began his career directly under Julian Robertson at Tiger Management. When Robertson closed Tiger in 2000, he provided Coleman with $25 million in seed capital to start his own fund. Coleman founded Tiger Global Management in 2001 and rapidly demonstrated that his instincts for identifying high-quality technology businesses were exceptional. Tiger Global pioneered a hybrid strategy combining public equity investments in technology companies with direct private venture investments in the same companies at earlier stages — allowing the fund to capture value across the entire capital structure of high-growth tech businesses. His early investments in Facebook, LinkedIn, Spotify, JD.com, and dozens of other technology leaders generated extraordinary returns. Tiger Global grew to manage approximately $95 billion at its peak, making Coleman one of the wealthiest and most powerful investors of his generation. The fund suffered a sharp drawdown in 2022 as growth equity valuations collapsed after years of easy money — losing roughly half its value — but Coleman's track record over the full period from 2001 to 2022 remained exceptional. Coleman exemplifies the Tiger Cub phenomenon: Robertson's talent for identifying and mentoring future exceptional investors proved nearly as impactful as his own investing success, creating an investor dynasty spanning multiple generations.
