Charles Woodburn

CEO of BAE Systems · BAE Systems

global

Charles Woodburn has served as CEO of BAE Systems since 2017, leading Europe's largest defense company through what has become the most significant increase in Western defense spending since the Cold War. BAE Systems designs and manufactures military equipment across five domains: air (Typhoon fighter, FCAS participation, Tempest), maritime (Astute-class and Dreadnought-class submarines, Type 26 frigates), land (CV90, BvS10 all-terrain vehicles, Hägglunds), electronic systems (radar, electronic warfare, advanced sensors), and cyber and intelligence. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 transformed the global defense landscape. NATO member states committed to dramatically increasing defense budgets, European countries that had severely underfunded their militaries for decades began emergency procurement programs, and ammunition stockpiles required urgent replenishment. BAE Systems, with its broad portfolio and production capacity, has been a primary beneficiary — order backlogs reached record levels exceeding £70 billion. Woodburn's key decisions involve production capacity expansion to meet surging demand, hiring thousands of engineers and skilled workers in a tight labor market, managing complex multi-decade programs, international partnership strategy (particularly AUKUS and the Global Combat Air Programme), and capital allocation.
