Catherine MacGregor

CEO of Engie · Engie

global

Catherine MacGregor became CEO of Engie in January 2021, the first woman to lead a CAC 40-listed energy company. MacGregor came from Schlumberger (now SLB), where she spent over 20 years in the oilfield services industry, bringing operational rigor and project execution experience to a company that had been through years of strategic uncertainty under multiple leadership changes. Engie is one of Europe's largest energy groups, with a complex portfolio spanning renewable energy generation (wind, solar, hydro), natural gas infrastructure (LNG terminals, gas storage, distribution networks), energy services (district heating, facility management), and nuclear operations (through its stake in Belgium's nuclear fleet). The company operates in over 30 countries and employs approximately 100,000 people. MacGregor's strategy has focused on simplifying Engie's sprawling portfolio, accelerating renewable energy investment, and growing the energy infrastructure and services businesses. She has pursued asset dispositions in non-core markets while investing in battery storage, green hydrogen, and grid-scale renewables. Her key challenges include managing the Belgian nuclear phase-out timeline (which keeps being extended due to energy security concerns), navigating European gas market volatility, executing large-scale renewable projects at competitive returns, and growing the energy services business. Her decisions on capital allocation, nuclear negotiations with the Belgian government, and renewable growth targets are the primary stock drivers on Euronext Paris.
