Financial crisis history, sovereign debt, financial repression, exchange rate crises

Carmen Reinhart is a Minos A. Zombanakis Professor of the International Financial System at Harvard Kennedy School and served as World Bank senior vice president and chief economist from 2020 to 2022. Along with Kenneth Rogoff, she co-authored "This Time Is Different" and has produced foundational research on banking crises, sovereign defaults, exchange rate crashes, and financial repression. Her work on the debt overhang and its effects on economic growth has been central to policy debates following the 2008 crisis. She has also contributed research on capital flow cycles and emerging market vulnerabilities. Her construction of comprehensive historical datasets covering centuries of default episodes, banking panics, and currency crises has made her work an indispensable reference for sovereign credit analysts, central bankers, and macro investors assessing the sustainability of current debt trajectories in both advanced and emerging economies.
