Carlo Messina

CEO of Intesa Sanpaolo · Intesa Sanpaolo

global

Carlo Messina became CEO of Intesa Sanpaolo in 2013, taking over Italy's largest bank by total assets and market capitalization during one of the most challenging periods for European banking. Italian banks were weighed down by massive non-performing loan portfolios, sovereign debt risk, and a stagnant domestic economy. Messina executed a disciplined de-risking strategy — aggressively writing down bad loans, strengthening capital ratios, and investing in fee-generating businesses like wealth management and insurance that are less sensitive to interest rate cycles. Under Messina, Intesa Sanpaolo has consistently delivered among the highest returns on tangible equity in European banking, regularly exceeding 15% — a level that many peers struggle to reach. His 2020 acquisition of rival UBI Banca consolidated Intesa's domestic market leadership and generated significant cost synergies. Messina has also built Intesa's wealth management and insurance divisions (through Eurizon and Intesa Vita) into major profit contributors, diversifying revenue away from traditional lending. Messina's capital management is particularly notable: he has committed to distributing the vast majority of Intesa's profits to shareholders through dividends and buybacks while maintaining excess capital buffers. His ability to generate superior returns in a challenging Italian banking environment, combined with one of the most generous capital return policies in European banking, are the primary drivers of Intesa Sanpaolo's stock price.
