C. Vijayakumar (known as CVK) is the CEO and Managing Director of HCL Technologies, India's third-largest IT services company with over $13 billion in annual revenue. Born in Tamil Nadu, CVK joined HCL as a graduate engineering trainee in 1994 and rose through every level of the organization — a rare CEO-from-the-bottom story in an industry where leadership positions often go to external hires or founding family members. CVK's signature achievement was the $1.8 billion acquisition of select IBM software products in 2018, the largest deal in Indian IT history at the time. The acquisition — which included Lotus Notes/Domino, Connections, AppScan, Commerce, and other enterprise software — was initially controversial (critics called it "buying legacy software"). But CVK's bet proved prescient: the IBM products generated recurring license and subscription revenue with high margins, giving HCL a product business that complemented its services operations. No other Indian IT company had such a hybrid model. Under CVK's "Mode 1-2-3" framework, HCL organized its business into three engines: traditional IT services (Mode 1), next-generation digital transformation (Mode 2), and products & platforms (Mode 3). This structure provided a clarity of strategy that competitors lacked and allowed HCL to consistently win large infrastructure deals while growing its digital business. HCL's engineering and R&D services division, another CVK focus area, became one of the company's fastest-growing segments as manufacturers outsourced increasingly complex engineering work. CVK's decisions on GenAI services strategy (training thousands of consultants on AI), products & platforms investment levels, large deal pricing discipline, and talent management in a competitive market are the key variables for HCL Tech's stock. His understated leadership style and HCL's consistent financial delivery have earned the company a premium valuation among Indian IT services stocks.
