Distressed debt, credit investing, Oaktree Capital history, credit cycle management

Bruce Karsh co-founded Oaktree Capital Management in 1995 with Howard Marks and other partners after working at TCW Group. He has co-managed Oaktree's distressed debt and credit strategies across multiple cycles, becoming one of the most respected practitioners in the field. Karsh focuses particularly on the distressed debt strategies at Oaktree — investing in the debt of companies in or near financial distress. He serves as president of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team. Oaktree manages over $170 billion across credit strategies. Karsh's disciplined approach to distressed investing — emphasizing understanding the value of a company as a going concern or in liquidation before committing capital, and understanding the legal rights of different creditor classes — has generated consistent returns across multiple credit cycles spanning more than three decades.
