Bank of America CEO · Bank of America

US — consumer banking, corporate banking, bank restructuring, mortgage settlements

Brian Moynihan became CEO of Bank of America in January 2010, taking over during one of the most challenging periods in the bank's history. Bank of America had acquired Countrywide Financial in 2008, inheriting massive toxic mortgage exposure that ultimately required over $50 billion in settlements with regulators and investors — the largest series of mortgage-related settlements in U.S. banking history. Moynihan's tenure has focused on simplifying Bank of America's sprawling operations, divesting non-core assets, rebuilding capital levels, and improving operational efficiency through digital transformation. Under his leadership, Bank of America became a leader in consumer banking digital channels, reducing branch costs while expanding digital customer relationships. He is known for advocacy on responsible banking, ESG commitments, and raising the company's minimum wage significantly. His survival and turnaround of Bank of America through legacy mortgage liabilities is considered one of the more challenging CEO mandates in modern banking history.
