Brian Armstrong
US crypto regulation, retail cryptocurrency adoption, institutional crypto custody, Nasdaq crypto listing, digital asset compliance
Brian Armstrong grew up in San Jose, California and studied economics and computer science at Rice University. He worked at Airbnb as a software engineer before founding Coinbase in 2012 with Fred Ehrsam. Coinbase built a reputation for regulatory compliance and ease of use that distinguished it from competitors in an industry often criticized for lax standards. This compliance-first approach proved valuable when Coinbase went public through a direct listing on Nasdaq in April 2021, becoming the first major cryptocurrency exchange to trade on a US stock exchange. The listing was historically significant for legitimizing the crypto industry. Armstrong has been an active advocate for cryptocurrency regulation in the US, while also challenging regulatory overreach through litigation. Coinbase expanded from spot trading to derivatives, custody, and staking services, making it one of the most comprehensive cryptocurrency platforms globally.
