Barry Lam

Founder & Chairman of Quanta Computer · Quanta Computer

global

Barry Lam founded Quanta Computer in 1988 in Taiwan and built it into the world's largest notebook computer manufacturer by volume — producing laptops for virtually every major brand including Apple, HP, Dell, and Lenovo. However, the company's most exciting growth story is now in AI servers and cloud computing infrastructure. Quanta has emerged as one of the primary original design manufacturers (ODMs) for AI servers, building custom server systems incorporating NVIDIA's GPU accelerators for hyperscale cloud customers. As AI training and inference workloads have exploded, demand for specialized GPU server systems has surged, and Quanta — with its manufacturing scale, engineering capabilities, and existing relationships with major cloud operators — has been a direct beneficiary. The AI server business now commands significantly higher margins than traditional notebook manufacturing. Lam's strategic vision of transitioning Quanta from a commodity PC assembler toward higher-value cloud and AI infrastructure has been vindicating. Key stock drivers include AI server order momentum (heavily influenced by NVIDIA GPU supply and cloud capex), notebook PC demand cycles, margin mix improvement as AI servers grow as a percentage of revenue, and Quanta's competitive positioning against other ODMs like Foxconn, Wistron, and Inventec in the AI server market.
