Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo took the role of Managing Director and Group CEO of Ooredoo in 2021. Previously serving as CFO of the group and holding senior positions in Qatar's sovereign wealth ecosystem, Fakhroo brought deep financial and strategic expertise to lead Ooredoo's next phase of growth. Ooredoo, formerly known as Qtel, is Qatar's largest telecom operator and has expanded aggressively into emerging markets across the Middle East, North Africa, and Southeast Asia. Under Fakhroo's leadership, Ooredoo has focused on several strategic priorities. In Qatar, the company capitalized on its role as the official telecom partner of the 2022 FIFA World Cup to showcase its 5G network capabilities, positioning itself as a technology leader in the Gulf region. Internationally, Fakhroo has taken a portfolio optimization approach — evaluating each country operation for growth potential and strategic fit, and considering divestments of underperforming or non-core markets to focus resources on higher-return opportunities. Fakhroo has also driven Ooredoo's pivot toward digital services, including fintech, cloud computing, IoT, and digital entertainment — aiming to reduce dependence on traditional voice and data revenue, which face commoditization pressure. The company's operations span diverse markets from Indonesia (its largest by subscribers through Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison) to Algeria, Tunisia, Iraq, Kuwait, and Myanmar. Fakhroo's decisions on capital allocation across this diverse portfolio, 5G monetization, digital service development, and potential M&A or divestitures are the key variables for Ooredoo's stock performance.
