global
Anders Opedal became President and CEO of Equinor in November 2020. A petroleum engineer by training who spent his career in drilling, field development, and operations across Equinor's global portfolio, Opedal leads Norway's largest company — majority-owned (67%) by the Norwegian state — and one of Europe's most important energy producers. Equinor's strategic position is unique: as the dominant operator on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, it produces approximately 2 million barrels of oil equivalent per day from some of the most technically advanced offshore platforms in the world. Norway's favorable fiscal and regulatory regime, combined with low-carbon-intensity production, makes Equinor's upstream operations among the most profitable and sustainable in the global oil industry. Under Opedal's leadership, Equinor has committed to a dual strategy: maximizing value from its upstream oil and gas portfolio while building a world-leading offshore wind business. The company has made massive commitments to offshore wind, including Empire Wind and Beacon Wind off New York, Dogger Bank in the UK (the world's largest offshore wind farm), and multiple projects in Norway and Europe. However, the offshore wind business has faced significant cost inflation and permitting challenges, forcing Equinor to take impairments and renegotiate contracts. Opedal's decisions on capital allocation between oil and renewables, Norwegian shelf development, international upstream portfolio management, and offshore wind project execution are the primary stock drivers on the Oslo Stock Exchange.
