Ana Botín

Executive Chairman of Santander · Banco Santander

European and Latin American banking, Santander digital transformation, retail banking strategy, female leadership in finance, cross-border banking models

Ana Botín became Executive Chairman of Banco Santander in 2014 following the death of her father Emilio Botín, who had previously led the bank. She had previously run Santander's UK operations and Banesto in Spain. Under her leadership, Santander has aggressively pursued digital banking transformation across its major markets in Europe and Latin America — particularly Spain, Brazil, Mexico, and the UK. She has championed Santander's consumer finance and digital banking initiatives including Openbank. As one of the most visible female executives in global banking, she has also been an advocate for women in financial services. Santander manages assets exceeding €1.7 trillion. Botín has worked to position Santander as a global leader in responsible banking, emphasizing financial inclusion and sustainable finance commitments across Santander's key markets, while pursuing operational efficiency measures that have improved the bank's return on equity.
