Design and deployment of Orb hardware and the biometric onboarding protocol that enabled World ID and the WLD airdrop
Led engineering efforts that produced the Orb biometric hardware and the associated software stack used for personhood verification in Worldcoin's onboarding process. Delivered specific design choices for device operation, iris capture workflow and edge processing that determined deployment speed, geographic footprint and the manner in which biometric data was handled prior to integration with World ID cryptographic attestation. Authored or supervised technical documentation and public demonstrations that defined interoperability constraints, device trust models and the cryptographic boundary between biometric capture and zero‑knowledge proofs used for identity attestation. Those deliverables were foundational for the architecture that permitted a large scale airdrop while claiming to minimize raw data exposure. Coordinated field deployments and vendor integrations, making operational tradeoffs between throughput, accuracy and privacy that directly shaped where and how millions of onboarding events occurred. Technical decisions about firmware, local data retention and attestation formats had downstream effects on regulatory responses, user trust and the feasibility of token distribution at scale. Through hands‑on ownership of the Orb project and its protocols, materially determined the technical pathway by which Worldcoin established World ID, thereby exerting a concrete influence on the token's initial distribution mechanics, compliance posture and subsequent market availability.
