Alan Howard
Global — rates markets, macro hedge funds, fixed income derivatives, systematic macro
Alan Howard co-founded Brevan Howard Asset Management in 2002 along with four other former Credit Suisse First Boston traders. The fund, named after its co-founders (Brevan combines letters from the surnames of Brevan and Howard), grew to become one of the largest macro hedge funds in the world with peak assets exceeding $40 billion. Brevan Howard became famous for preserving and growing capital during the 2008 financial crisis, posting positive returns when most hedge funds suffered severe losses. The fund's approach centers on rates markets and global macroeconomic analysis, with a particular strength in interest rate derivatives and curve positioning. Howard is known for exceptional discretionary trading skill and for building one of the most sophisticated rates trading operations in the hedge fund industry. The fund underwent significant restructuring after 2013 as macro strategies faced headwinds, but has rebuilt under Howard's leadership with a more systematic overlay alongside discretionary macro.
