Ruchir Sharma
Emerging market equity strategy, global growth analysis, country-level macro, EM political risk
Ruchir Sharma served as head of emerging markets and global macro at Morgan Stanley Investment Management for over two decades. His books — "Breakout Nations" (2012) and "The Rise and Fall of Nations" (2016) — developed a framework for identifying which countries would sustain or lose economic momentum. Sharma is known for travelling to countries personally before investing, believing that on-the-ground observation is irreplaceable in EM. He became chief global strategist at Rockefeller International. His commentary reaches broad audiences through regular columns in the Financial Times and New York Times. His work emphasizes the importance of identifying structural inflection points in demographics, debt cycles, and political change — factors that traditional quantitative screens miss — providing a qualitative overlay that complements more systematic approaches to emerging market investing.
